VNG dizziness and balance test ยท St. Louis
The VNG test tracks your eyes to find where dizziness after an injury is coming from.
VNG uses your eye movements as a window into the inner ear and balance system. At painstl.com camera goggles record your eyes as you track moving lights and shift into different positions, and the recording shows where in the balance system the fault lies.

This test happens only on a physician’s order. It runs only while a physician is on site and immediately available.
How does the test work?
Goggles with a built-in camera record your eye movements while you track lights and move into different positions.
Why would your physician order it?
Dizziness after a car crash or a fall can come from the inner ear, from the nerves that steer the eyes, or from the neck. These look alike from the outside. VNG helps identify which system is involved, so treatment is aimed correctly instead of guessed. Headache at the back of the skull can travel with it; see occipital neuralgia.
What will you feel?
Some positions can bring on a short spin. That is normal for this test. A technician is at your side the entire time.
Getting ready for test day
No eye makeup. Your physician will tell you whether to pause sleep aids, dizziness pills or similar medicines for a day or two.
Tell us before the test about
- A neck injury that limits movement
- Recent eye surgery
- A seizure history
How much time to plan for
Plan on about 45 to 60 minutes each time.
What to remember
- A short spell of dizziness is expected.
- Leave off mascara and eyeliner.
- Check with your physician about which medicines to pause.
Last step. Show us you have it: Explain to your technician which medicines you are checking with your physician on. Unsure about any step? We run through it with you again next time.

Ask whether this belongs in your plan
A physician reviews your history and your procedures first, then writes the orders. Nothing is added without a reason in your chart.
