Back brace for low back pain ยท St. Louis

A back brace supports a healing low back. It does not replace the muscles that are supposed to.

A back brace is a wraparound support for the lower back and abdomen, stiffened by a firmer rear panel. At painstl.com it is sized and adjusted to you, and it supports the low back while it heals, especially when sitting, standing for long stretches or lifting.

What exactly is it?

A wraparound support with a stiffer back panel, sized and fitted in the clinic.

Why would it be part of your plan?

Support during the hardest positions of the day lets an injured or recently treated back rest while it heals. The risk is leaning on it so long that the core muscles weaken further, which is why your home exercises continue while you wear it. Many patients who need one were injured at work lifting.

What a good fit feels like

Firm and close, but never tight. A full breath should be easy, and two fingers should slip beneath the edge.

Daily use and care

It goes over a thin fitted shirt, not against bare skin. Take it off for showers and bedtime, unless your physician has said to keep it on. Look at your skin every morning and every night.

Warning signs that mean you call

  • Fresh numbness or tingling down a leg
  • Blisters or raw spots on the skin
  • Trouble breathing with it on

Every item is fitted on you in the clinic. We demonstrate wearing it, using it and removing it, hand you written instructions, and have you do it solo before leaving. Pain, a poor fit or a broken part means a call to (314) 886-5620.

How much time to plan for

As your physician ordered.

What to remember

  1. Snug, with room for two fingers under the edge.
  2. Thin shirt under it, always.
  3. Your home exercises continue while you wear it.

Last step. Show us you have it: Right here in the clinic, demonstrate how you get the brace on and off. Unsure about any step? We run through it with you again next time.

Ask whether this belongs in your plan

A physician reviews your history and your procedures first, then writes the orders. Nothing is added without a reason in your chart.
